MID-SEASON COACHING HONORS

BOSTON, MA -- Northern Illinois' Mark Montgomery is the recipient of the Hugh Durham award mid-season honors.

Picked to finish fifth in the Mid-American Conference West Division, Northern Illinois began the season 7-0. It was the best unbeaten start for NIU since the 1994-95 season and third best win streak to start the season in school history.

The Huskies 11 non-conference wins are the most for the program since 1989-90 when NIU won 17 as an independent. The last time NIU won more than 11 non-conference games, while in a conference, was during the 1971-72.

Now in his fifth season Montgomery has led the Huskies to 11th nationally in field goal percentage defense (37.2%), 16th in scoring defense (61.9 ppg) and 22nd in the country in rebounding margin (+8.4).

The Hugh Durham Award is presented annually to the nation's top mid-major coach. The award is named in honor of Hugh Durham who had retired at the end of the 2004-05 season. Durham is one of just twelve coaches to have led two different programs to the NCAA Final Four (Florida State in 1972 and Georgia in 1983). He is the only coach among that group to have led both schools to their lone Final Four appearance.

The recipient of the 2016 award will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Award Presentation on April 1 in Houston, site of the men’s division I national championship.
